Meet Congressman Mike McIntyre

PictureMike McIntyre, who represents the Seventh Congressional District in southeastern North Carolina, was first elected to office in 1996 and has been re-elected by overwhelming majorities in each subsequent election.

The Wilmington Star-News found Congressman McIntyre to be "the most powerful and effective leader" in a leadership survey of more than 300 area leaders. Not only was Rep. McIntyre tops among governmental and political leaders, but he also ranked first among all leaders, including civic and business leaders.

Congressman McIntyre was educated in the public schools of his hometown of Lumberton, North Carolina. A Morehead Scholar, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's degree in political science, and went on to earn his Juris Doctorate in 1981. During his senior year of college, he was presented the Sullivan Award by the university chancellor for "unselfish interest in the welfare of his fellow man."

Prior to his election to Congress, Mike McIntyre was very involved in church, civic, and professional activities. McIntyre has been a lay leader in the First Presbyterian Church of Lumberton with service as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Chairman of the Weekday School and Day Care Committee. McIntyre has also served in the Lumberton Area Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts, and local Parent Teacher Association. He has coached three All-American Drug-Free Sports teams. As a strong supporter of issues that impact the family, McIntyre was a charter member of both the North Carolina Commission on Children and Youth and the North Carolina Commission on the Family. A tireless advocate for improvements to the region's education system, McIntyre has volunteered in the schools for the past 20 years, and he continues to speak to classrooms as United States Congressman.
