Meet Congressman Mike McIntyre
Mike McIntyre, who represents the Seventh
Congressional District in southeastern North Carolina, was
first elected to office in 1996 and has been re-elected by
overwhelming majorities in each subsequent election.
The Wilmington Star-News found Congressman
McIntyre to be "the most powerful and effective leader"
in a leadership survey of more than 300 area leaders. Not
only was Rep. McIntyre tops among governmental and political
leaders, but he also ranked first among all leaders, including
civic and business leaders.
Congressman McIntyre was educated in the
public schools of his hometown of Lumberton, North Carolina.
A Morehead Scholar, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's degree
in political science, and went on to earn his Juris Doctorate
in 1981. During his senior year of college, he was presented
the Sullivan Award by the university chancellor for "unselfish
interest in the welfare of his fellow man."
Prior to his election to Congress, Mike
McIntyre was very involved in church, civic, and professional
activities. McIntyre has been a lay leader in the First Presbyterian
Church of Lumberton with service as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday
School teacher, and Chairman of the Weekday School and Day
Care Committee. McIntyre has also served in the Lumberton
Area Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts, and local
Parent Teacher Association. He has coached three All-American
Drug-Free Sports teams. As a strong supporter of issues that
impact the family, McIntyre was a charter member of both the
North Carolina Commission on Children and Youth and the North
Carolina Commission on the Family. A tireless advocate for
improvements to the region's education system, McIntyre has
volunteered in the schools for the past 20 years, and he continues
to speak to classrooms as United States Congressman.

In 1987, Mike McIntyre was chosen as one
of the state's Five Outstanding Young North Carolinians of
the Year by the North Carolina Jaycees. In 1989, McIntyre
earned the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service
for his work with children and educators.
In Congress, Representative McIntyre chairs the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Specialty Crops, Rural Development and Foreign Agriculture, including biotechnology, and he is a senior member of the House Armed Services
Committee where he fights to protect our farm families and
to support our servicemen, servicewomen, and military retirees.
He is one of the founding Co-Chairmen of the Special Operations
Forces Caucus. Committed to the people he serves, McIntyre
has been an ardent defender of our senior citizens, a strong
advocate for health care and education improvements, and a
leader in law enforcement issues.
Representative McIntyre was chosen by his
colleagues to co-chair two important task forces: the House
Rural Health Care Coalition and the Congressional Task Force
on Fatherhood Promotion. Congressman McIntyre was the only
Member of Congress in the U.S. House to be chosen for the National
Rural Health Care Association's Legislative Award in 2003
for his leadership on health issues. Additionally, McIntyre
is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of "solution-oriented
conservative Democrats," where he Co-Chairs the Coalition's Task Force on Business and Technology.
In 2007, Congressman McIntyre was selected the National Legislator of the Year by the Farm Service Agency Employees' Association. In 2001, Representative McIntyre was presented
the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award by the Robeson
County Crop Promotion Association and the "Super Hero
Award" by the National Association of Community Health
Centers. He has also been honored nationally by the American
Coastal Coalition for his work in the protection and preservation
of our beaches and has received the Conservationist Award
of the NC Coastal Land Trust. The North Carolina Narcotics
Enforcement Officers Association has also honored Rep. McIntyre
for his work on behalf of law enforcement and public safety.
The fight for jobs and economic development
by Rep. McIntyre has earned him the distinction of being the
first person ever to receive an international award in public
policy by the International Association of Personnel in Employment
Security. He also won the National Leadership Award for economic development by the National Association of Development
Organizations in 2007, and he was chosen for the 2002 North Carolina
Employment Security Advancing Workforce Development Award.
Congressman McIntyre has been recognized
by both the Air Force Association and the Association of the
U.S. Army, and he represents the Armed Services Committee
on the advisory board of the U.S. Naval Academy. He received
the prestigious Charles Dick Medal of Merit from the National
Guard Association for his work on behalf of our national defense,
and The Military Officers Association of North Carolina has
awarded him Honorary Life Membership because of his leadership
and commitment to our armed forces, veterans, and military
retirees.
Other organizations which have recognized
Congressman McIntyre's accomplishments include the American
Farm Bureau Federation, the National Farmers Union, the American
Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Federation
of Independent Business, the American Federation of Teachers,
the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare,
the Southern Economic Development Council and the U. S. Chamber
of Commerce.
In 2006, after a decade of service on Capitol Hill, the Center for Christian Statesmanship honored Mike for "his character, leadership, integrity and faithfulness in public service," by naming his the national Distinguished Christian Statesman of the Year.
Congressman McIntyre lives in Lumberton
with his wife, Dee Strickland McIntyre. Their two sons,
Joshua and Stephen, both won scholarships to
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as undergraduates and are now enrolled in law school there. Joshua's wife, Caroline, also graduated from UNC and recently taught at Southeastern Academy.
